Financial literacy - Young people in Croatia are very Financially illiterate, why don't they Teach us about it in Schools?

We could define financial literacy as the basic financial knowledge we need to be able to function normally in today’s increasingly complex world. The problem is that we are not taught about it in schools , so not even many adults know how to manage their money.

We define financial literacy as a combination of information, knowledge, skills, attitudes and behaviors needed to make the right financial decisions to achieve individual well-being. But do we have the basic financial knowledge we need to function in today’s environment, do we know how to manage our money, and can we pray for more money or material goods? Do we need to teach children how to treat money?

It seems to us that it should, because according to a survey from 2019, only 59% of the population of Croatia is financially literate. The research is based on 3 basic elements – financial knowledge, financial behavior and financial attitudes. Only 50% of respondents in Croatia said they had a budget, well below the Southeast European average of 63%. Critics are young people aged 18-29 who have very low knowledge of finances because they probably did not have the opportunity to dispose of their own money, which is partly due to parents and the education system that does not accidentally or intentionally educate them about it.

They made an excellent contribution to this on Laudato TV in the show “Izdvojeno”, in which Marina Ralasic, president of the Institute for Financial Education ” Stedopis “, and psychologist and theologian Father Mijo Nikic spoke about it. Be sure to read the very useful free textbook on financial and economic literacy “Money and I” .
